Information on Komen Tyler Funding
Re: The Reader Response opinion concerning Susan G. Komen for the Cure funding published in the Sunday, December 20, 2009 Tyler Morning Telegraph.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s promise is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality of care for all and energizing science to find the cures. Since launching the breast cancer movement 27 years ago, Komen for the Cure has transformed the culture, bringing breast cancer out of the closet and changing how the world talks about and treats this devastating disease. During the journey, it was often controversial and considered inappropriate to discuss diseases of the breast openly. We have come a long way, but face new challenges. Many underserved women find breast cancer at a later and more aggressive stage and have a higher mortality rate. To end breast cancer forever, we must reach out and provide education, screening and treatment programs beyond traditional realms.
In 2009, Komen Tyler granted out $265,000 to organizations in Smith County that provide screening and education for breast health services. The largest grant, $225,250, was awarded to the Northeast Texas Public Health District to pay for breast screening and diagnostic services for uninsured women. Seventy-five percent of the money raised by our affiliate is granted to fund programs in Smith County with the remaining twenty-five percent going to national clinical research.
In some communities, Planned Parenthood may be the only source of free or low-cost women’s health screening services (e.g. pap smears, mammograms, clinical breast exams, etc.). A small number of Komen Affiliates provide restricted grants to Planned Parenthood clinics that offer vital breast health services for underserved women. These services often provide otherwise unavailable breast screening for women ages 40 and older. Komen and its Affiliates do not provide any funding for abortions or for any activities outside the scope of our promise to end breast cancer.
All community grants are restricted and closely monitored to provide vital breast health education, screening and treatment services. Komen Tyler conducted a Community Profile assessment this year and identified gaps in breast health and breast health services. All Komen Tyler grant applications are solicited through an open request for proposals and are reviewed by a Grants Committee comprised of local physicians, community health professionals, and breast health advocates.
If we can provide more information about Komen Tyler and our funding, please do not hesitate to call (903) 561-6992.
